Jim Hunter(5-1) thrilled the fans at Shea Stadium as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Baltimore Orioles. The New York Yankees won by a
final score of 1 to 0.
Hunter was spectacular. He did not even surrender a walk. The tension
started to build around the 6th inning. By the 9th inning the crowd was
electrified. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory.
Jim Palmer(2-3) absorbed the loss. He pitched 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 6
walks. It took a while to pry Hunter way from his teammates as they all
wanted to show their appreciation and joy. Finally, however, Bill Virdon got
to offer his own congratulations with a big bear hug and the comment, 'That
was one of the best pitched games I have seen in all my years in baseball -
Hunter was masterful out there tonight!'
