WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Joe Morgan robbed Rod Gilbreath of a base hit.
Don Gullett pitched 9 strong innings and first baseman Tony Perez added four
ribbies to his seasonal total with one swing of the bat as the dominant
Cincinnati Reds crushed the Atlanta Braves 16 to 1.
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Perez. He cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 18th
of the season) in the 2nd inning and doubled resulting in a run in the 7th
inning. Cincinnati lit up the scoreboard in the 2nd inning which saw them
plate 6 runs on 5 hits and the 4th inning with 4 runs on 3 hits. Cincinnati
finished with 18 hits in the victory.
The winning pitcher was Gullett(15-5) who allowed 1 run for the game. Blue
Moon Odom(1-7) was the loser. Sparky Anderson was very impressed with his
pitcher, Gullett, 'He had unusually good pitch placement this afternoon. It
was almost unfair - but a beautiful game to watch from where I sat'
