Gary Nolan held Oakland to 3 hits and Johnny Bench had 2 base hits and 2 RBI
as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Oakland Athletics by a score of 6 to
1.
Nolan(2-0) was tremendous on the mound for Cincinnati. He didn't give up
much, just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.57 to
1.69. Cincinnati totaled 8 hits on the night.
Dick Bosman(0-1) ended up with the loss. 'Nolan gave us exactly what we
needed tonight,' Sparky Anderson said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw
it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he
had them chasing it.'
